Dear Readers: As Mr. Graham is now quite elderly and in poor health, he is occasionally given to strange ideas, blunt language, and suggestions from his Interns that may seem uncharacteristic. Please forgive him, as God undoubtedly has. —The Mooseclean’s Editors

Q: My brother caught me in bed with his wife.  He is sterile, and doesn’t believe that I was only trying to be a helpful sibling by impregnating her. Can you help me reason with him? — S.C.

A: First of all, I want to thank you for this most courageous act of Christian charity, albeit a misunderstood and unappreciated one.

In this matter, you are quite correct. For the answer, your brother need look no further than the first book of the Bible:

Then Judah said to Onan, “Go in to your brother’s wife, and perform your duty as a brother-in-law to her, and raise up offspring for your brother.”
Onan knew that the offspring would not be his; so when he went in to his brother’s wife, he wasted his seed on the ground in order not to give offspring to his brother.
But what he did was displeasing in the sight of the LORD; so He took his life also.

(Genesis 38:8-10)

I know, in your heart, you took no pleasure in this act, but did this only out of selfless and well-meaning intent to help your sibling with his most troubling problem. Indeed, the greater sin would have been to deny his wife the gift of your seed as Onan did. Your only sin here was that you were caught in the act of giving to the needy, rather than working with diligence to conceal your good deed.  As Jesus said in His Sermon on the Mount:

Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
(Matthew 6:2-4 )

So my answer is this: share these verses with your brother and apologize if you must to regain his favour, but continue to sleep with his wife on the sly.  Give her the gift of your seed as many times per week—or even per day—as is humanly possible.  Make the time, but ensure that the deed is done in a nice, quiet place far away from prying eyes. Anywhere will do: a motel room in an isolated part of town, a baseball dugout, the washroom at Denny’s (for 24 hour convenience). And remember—God loves you, and life’s greatest joy comes from knowing Him. Open your heart and life to Jesus Christ today.
