TORONTO—After Toronto FC lost the MLS Cup to the Seattle Sounders in a shootout, new parents and longtime soccer fans John and Anna Besh made a decision.
“Look, if the format is good enough to decide a championship game, it’s good enough to decide our daughter’s name,” said John. He and wife Anna have been arguing over their child’s name since they found out they were having a girl in June. “Now that the baby is here, we need to make a decision and file the paperwork. I predict Millicent will win with a shot to the top right corner of the net.”
“Wrong,” retorted Anna. “Her name will be CAL-YPS Oooooh! Oooooh!”
The shootout is set to take place at the middle school across the street from the Besh’s house. Both shooters have sports backgrounds and are feeling confident.
“I think John has a harder shot,” said family friend and acting goalie Aaron Torrence. “But Anna has better aim. They decided to shoot from the regulation 12 yards out, so realistically it’ll probably take 10 or 15 shots before one of them scores.”
Friends of the couple have set up a pool with half the money going to the winner and half going to post-match beer and nachos.
